Oh Neil, that doesn't help now, and besides there is no explanation it
wasn't a straight console login.

Hmm unlikely you changed the permission on /bin/grep, so these could be
the permissions on "/" "/bin/" or possibly the password file
"/etc/passwd" is munged (or related authentication stuff, altough with).

More likely it is the problems with mounting proc is more generic. Read
the boot messages carefully for any clues, is "/" mounted read-only
still or is it read-write.

Also try booting from the Redhat CD, and mounting the file systems on
temporary directories, this should let you readily run fsck and fix any
probem if they are fairly basic.
