twm or maybe fvwm2
Windowmaker if you want  something nicer/prettier.

Sometimes the old machines are not really worth the effort ...

If you are making a network and are short of space (not that 2 
GBytes is that short) you cna mount some of the partitions using 
NFS, IE have a machine that has most of the executables on, one 
that has most of the data on, one with all the home partitions 
etc.
