i know a friend who works at SWEB and they have lots of UNIX boxes working with their AS/400 - if you can be more specific i can ask how they do it,

Not Linux but SCO, and HP-UX, and Windows, and DOS.


I never found a lack of suitable comms software.

What sort of "talk", not that I have any specific AS/400 knowledge, but
it supported all sorts of protocols, as Aaron suggested lots of
middleware stuff, but also traditional ftp and similar is available.
