See my previous mail on this subject today, which mentioned the 
CD-Writing-HOWTO, and said that you can direct copy data cds with:

cdrecord -v speed=somespeed dev=00,00,00 driveropts=burnproof -isosize 
/dev/hdc
(where hdc is the device with the cd you're copying from)
