Hmm in which case it seems likely to me it is a bug in "top".

I don't think top does much but loop around /proc/NNNN adding
numbers up, so what version of top, what version of kernel on
each box.

Could be bug in more obscure dependency of course, or a
virus/trojan or a host of other stuff.
