I know it ceased to be an excusable choice in 1994 and was 
probably the wrong choice by 1993, but nevertheless the 
lumbering machinery of the NHS decided that this was the way to 
go.

Some of us went on Newsnight to say that.

Now, as part of the eGIF requirements, it is being ripped out.

The cost was not actually astronomical, but certainly sufficient 
to delay development of GP and hospital clinical IT systems 
locally and in many other areas.
