my CD-RW is on /dev/hdd, DVD/CD-ROM on /dev/hdc:

In lilo.conf:
  append="hdc=ide-cd,hdd=ide-scsi"

then in /etc/modutils/actions:
 pre-install ide-scsi modprobe ide-cd
 options ide-cd ignore=hdd

in /etc/modules:
 sr_mod
 sd_mod
 sg
 ide-scsi
 ide-cd

don't forget to run update-modutils and lilo ;)
