Because SMTP provides no means of confirming the identity of the sender ;-) Ownership of posts hasn't been an issue for me recently, but I'm seeing more and more junk, corrupt, viral and generally spurious mail. And also getting involved in antispam and other measures where people may chose to fake e-mail or newsgroup posts. I decided that the next mailer upgrade had to do GPG signing by default, before it becomes a major issue. So recipients can learn that if it ain't signed, it ain't from Simon. Also a lot of the messages I do now I am representing different organisation and in some cases I may be involved in minor but still important software patching issues, and other security issues which require some form of integrity check. I'd say using GPG but not signing every message wastes leaves your recipients in perpetual doubt as to whether the unsigned messages are from you. Why not sign every post? Simon PS: Despite having plenty of keys for Doctor Midgley, I don't have one for the address he suggested I use for medical stuff - hohum. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQE+JvB4GFXfHI9FVgYRAgzkAKCc3OCfc8l3jfmU//KJmA5RxyHvxACcD9xi xrYNQxFqdQljbqYHzl0ks/c= =hYMM -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
