(Despite your subject line, pre-installed XP may well use WINNT or NTFS 
instead of FAT32).
If XP is using the WINNT file system, (which, incidentally, WindowsME Setup 
thinks is OS/2 and insists on obliterating), check the links at 
www.google.co.uk/linux for info on dual-booting with WindowsNT - there are 
many more threads on this than on XP.
