It is similar to Netscape 4.7. You can select an LDAP server to perform autocompletion of addresses. You can select an LDAP server to store roaming profile information - i.e. all your customised settings can be picked up - when I lasted looked at this it was easier to buy the Netscape LDAP server offering, but all the documentation required to roll your own was provided (free of charge). However the address book can be more complex in structure than with Netscape 4.7, with subtrees. You can download an LDIF copy for use "off-line" or whilst away from work, which is a feature not in 4.7. The LDAP stuffs looks a little faster, and generally slicker, with the menu options more intuitive, and one or two new options.
On a related note, how the hell do i setup an LDAP server and admin it ?
What do you want to store in it? OpenLDAP has it's own
documentation, and I have documented in the archive of this list
how to convert an Outlook address book into a network shared
directory using OpenLDAP.
Setting up OpenLDAP is just like any other service, possibly
easier.
Setting up schema is really easy, what I found hard was trying
to understand how data was structured, and the classes work. The
actual tools weren't hard to use, although I occaisonally
struggled with the authentication option syntax with the
ldap-{search|add|etc} tools.
Indexing the LDAP database was really painless, again easy to
figure out how to do something, problem was knowing I had to do
it.
Adrian's link seems to require an IBM developer username and
password, I have one of those somewhere in my subscriptions
folder.
