[LUG] "extended partition: bad magic number"

LILO gets as far as LI, then prints a whole stream of "01 01" ad infinitum.
Trying to reinstall LILO from the (Mandrake) Linux install disks says "extended
partition: bad magic number" when it gets to reading the partition table.

I'm sure I've had something similar before, but I have a feeling I wiped the disk
completely and started again. This time, however, it was after the whole long
series of elaborate partitioning, repartioning and copying that is required to get
Windows onto a system that was previously happily running just linux (which, BTW,
backs up my theory that the toughest bit of doing a dual-boot linux installation is
persuading windows to work afterwards!).

I can go into all the gory details, if anybody thinks it might be relevant. The
last thing to happen was that windows crashed whilst copying files from one drive to
another (!), but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Any help most appreciated!

Jon
PS: My third modem in 6 months blew up last night, I am *not* amused >:-(
