All hard drives die, and I dislike when I see people cast blame on a

There are some "early warning" features on some HDs with SMART ability I
think is one. I was wondering, has anyone got any use of these
features under Linux (or windows for that matter)?

Not yet, but I see that redhat 7.3 has a SMART daemon starting at boot. I
haven't looked into it yet, but I have enabled SMART on the drives.

I use Seagate drives btw; had no problems with them at all :-)

I've got SMART enabled in the BIOS and I know when the drive is
going down because I can hear it "clunk" (RE Can't boot SuSE 8 form
the HD). I suspect that's it's attempt to inform an M$ OS of the
impending failure because I don't get a "clunk" if I disable SMART
in the BIOS.

Also there is a firmware upgrade for mpg3204at drives proir to 2001
but unfortunately only for Windows.DOS.

Any way I getting a new HD tomorrow.
