[LUG] Star Office choked and won't restart

I asked it to open a .pps file, it hung 9/10 of the way through opening it 
and I killed it.

Now if I ask soffice to run it shows an icon for a while, then goes away, and 
I have a couple of lines in the ps output including soffice.bin and 
soffice.bin [defunct].

THe latter seems to be completely unkillable - is there an incantation 
stronger than being root and issuing kill, or from top agreeing to kill 15?
