My next guess is that the file (configure) is in dos file format and so its trying to run #!/bin/sh[dospoo] try vim on the file, it'll report strangess in the bottom line after you run it. look for things like [dos] and [noeol] esc:q! to exit it after (if youre not familar with vi) If this is the case, you should be able to convert it with a less intelligent editor (such a pico), add a blank line or soemthing under the hashbang line so its forced to re-write the file.
