1. Gnome: don't unpack the packages you download, merely go to the theme 
selector in the Control Centre and select "Install New Theme". Browse to the 
gzipped file(s) that you've download and select them. Job done.

2.  Sawfish themes need to be unpacked and copied to the "Themes" directory 
within the Sawfish directory and can then be selected via "Appearance" via 
the Window Manager configuration dialogue with the Control Centre.
