Isn't automounter installed by default? I know I usually remove it. Try
'rpm -q automounter' (or 'automount') to see if its installed.

Is it? Is that via one of these pointy-clicky things like gnome or KDE?
:)

No, but the pointy-clicky redhat installation process :-) Even selecting a
server installation (i.e. no kde/gnome), I would suspect that automounter
would be installed.

I have plenty of fun fighting with solaris' volmgt most of the time, dont
bother with that stuff under linux.

Never bothered with it as such. Create the partitions - format, newfs, mount
and then leave it :-)
