What would cause a text-only login to take more than 3 times longer for

What authentication scheme are you using, and is it doing a lookup
on the machine you're coming from?

This isn't a remote login - I'm using the server terminal itself. Both logins
show as:
Kernel 2.4.8-26mdk on an i586 / tty1
Last login . . . . . on vc/1

How do I tell which authentication scheme Mandrake 8.1 uses in a text mode
non-virtual console login?

(Incidentally, FTP logins are real fast. I don't use telnet much, but I had
noticeable problems with lookups before and I got that sorted.)
