It failed saying that the root file 
system wasn't mounted, unable to mount the root file system 
from '4805' (which it turns out it got from the map file), 
and then paniced (no oops though).


If looks like something is confuzed as to what is the root
filesystem.

When you get your lilo prompt... Type:

root="/dev/sda?"

Where "/dev/sda?" is the partition on your SCSI disk you have the
root filesystem (if in doubt, boot up with another disk, and cat
/proc/partitions, you'll se summit like this:

lister:/home/trek/trII/files/htdocs/templates# cat /proc/partitions 
major minor  #blocks  name

  9     0   34892928 md0
  8     0   17942584 sda
  8     1      32098 sda1
  8     2   17904442 sda2
  8    16   17942584 sdb
  8    17     489982 sdb1
  8    18   17446558 sdb2
  8    32   17942584 sdc
  8    33     489982 sdc1
  8    34   17446558 sdc2
  8    48   17942584 sdd
  8    49     489982 sdd1
  8    50   17446558 sdd2

In this case, its probably "/dev/sda1", which is the largest
partition on the first disk.

If in still confuzed as to which one to use, try each one
(/dev/sda1-9) it won't harm anything.

If that works, and you manage to boot up, change/add "root=???" to
the partition you used to successfully boot up in /etc/lilo.conf, not
forgetting to re-run lilo.

Then again, it might be summit else....
