The same to you ;)

The OSC lacks an Apache style news server (flexible, secure, easy to
understand).

The sendmail of nntp is INN (http://www.isc.org/products/INN/) from
the ISC, however that for some people is reason enough not to use it.
It has always proved itself secure for me, and fairly easy to set
up, though I have had some problems load balancing it. It is fast
under high loads, though a bit overkill if you are only serving small
loads/local news server.

Others that I know of:

 - dnews (http://netwinsite.com/dnews.htm)
This one isn't open source, but it does have a few bonuses - It has
a windows config tool and although is a big confuzling to set up at
first, is easy to maintain. I've only used it while testing it out
for a company, and choose against it for the one reason it was closed
source. It load balances easily, but was rather slow with huge
loads.

 - leafnode (http://www.leafnode.org/)
Another small news server not designed for ISP/heavy usage, but is
stable, works well and easy to set up. I used it for a while
internally in a few companies, and they havn't seemed to have any
problems with it.

 - sn (http://infa.abo.fi/~patrik/sn/)
Designed for small, personal/internal networks where security isn't
a problem, lossing messages doesn't matter, and spped isn't an issue.
its not yet 100% finished, but has potential and needs developers.
I've only tried it once, and soon gave up ;p

Of course, there are other options, depending on your situation -
NNTPcache (http://www.nntpcache.org/) is great, and I use it a lot.

If there are any I missed out, I would be interested in hearing about
them, as news servers are one of the big headaches I regularly get
with work :( I'm currently running INN, but it's a bit to evil for
me....

Bah... 6 minutes until new year. I'm not going to finish this
program before 2002. There goes my new year 2001 resolution ;)

Theo =)
