Don't sendmail - use Postfix.

Hmm I doubt it needs to run as root. Think harder.

SIGPIPE - broken pipe or no reader (man 7 signal).

My guess is you were suppose to define "$sendmail" somewhere, so
it could create a sendmail process to use for delivery. If it
feeds mail into a sendmail process it almost certainly could run
as someone less important - like urm "nobody" *8-)

I've no idea what the akm does.
