The idea behind dial on demand is that you've got a network with (in this
case) a linux machine with a modem on it that handles all the internet
traffic for the network.

Dial on demand is when the linux gatway will automatically connect the
modem to your ISP when there is traffic destined for the internet and
disconnect the modem during periods of inactivity, thus saving on phone
calls.
