I have a Deskjet 840c inkjet which is nice & cheap now.
It has both parallel & USB connections and prints great with the HP linux
drivers as available with man 8. seemed to be ok with suse 7.2 as well.

I don't have mine connected via USB though but AFAIK it's supposed to work
fine.
