No idea about any of this but the thing about the PS2/serial adaptor 
rings a bell.

My adaptor was recognised by RH6.2 but not by 7.1 (Kudzu kept telling 
me it had been removed etc).

I went and spent one pound on a serial mouse in the shop in the 
Armada centre and all my troubles were over.
