It depends on the geography, so no one can say, if you have good line of
sight it may be done with one reasonable antenna in the middle, and a
few directional antennas at the fringes.

I suspect for 5 to 6 miles radius some points would have some line of
sight problems, unless you happen to live in a town that is beautifully
sat in the middle of one very regular valley (big chunks of Exeter can
see each other very nicely for example).

I live in a hollow (you wouldn't notice except when it is stormy) but
running wireless to Exmouth of Exeter will require us to befriend
someone in a higher place ;-)

It is a LAN, treat it like a LAN connection. The standard WEP encryption
doesn't prevent determined attackers connecting to the LAN, as a
determined attacker can eventually decrypt the "shared secret".

That said a determined enough attacker can probably connect to the LAN
in most buildings that don't have aggressive security policies.

Certainly I've had ample opportunities at my GPs surgery to insert my
own access if I'd wanted. A few seconds unattended for any unsearched
visitor is all it takes to insert the relevant device. Yes WLAN is
probably slightly easier, but what are you defending against?

They could probaby use Wireless Access cards, and not even need WAPs,
although with the WAP bridging you could probaby design a more robust
system with less big antennas.
