That is odd, should at least be able to read it. Looks like a problem with
permissions on this file, my /etc/fstab is set as :-

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          845 Sep 17  2002 /etc/fstab

chmod 644  /etc/fstab
chown root:root /etc/fstab

Maybe corrupted inode ?
